Indoor Rowing at Summer Fields School

Posted by Concept2 News on the 28th of April 2011

Hinksey Sculling School keeps on extending its Outreach Programme to the community. In the last few months, boys aged from 11 to 13 at Summer Fields School in Oxford have enjoyed Indoor Rowing instruction and activity delivered by Amelia Wright, Hinksey's Rowing Manager and coaches from her team.

This is the first time that Indoor Rowing has been available for them. Besides the boys, staff and parents have shown a keen interest. Next term they begin their sculling on Hinksey Lake. The Lake is a mile from the City centre and if you are on a train heading South leaving Oxford Station you can see it beside the track on the left.

The boys have also signed on for the Concept2 Schools League and taken part in the last few Challenges. One of their old boys is Constantine (Stan) Louloudis who rowed in the Oxford University crew that beat Cambridge in this year's Boat Race.

When John Broadhurst, one of Hinksey's co-founders was coaching the boys to row he spotted a 13 year old on the Indoor Rower. He is 6ft 3ins and taller than 'Stan' by two inches when he was there at the same age.

Word has spread. Another of the boys asked John:

"My great grandfather was Steve Fairbairn. Do you know him?"

"No not personally!" Was John's reply.

"But he has had a huge influence on rowing coaching for several generations. His most noted coaching advice was: 'mileage makes champions.' " He added.

Hinksey provides a full and fun programme for its juniors. They are keen to recruit adults who want to join the coaching team. And if you are interested in running some Indoor Rowing sessions you'd be especially welcome!
